In a multilingual classroom, students whose native language isn't English learn together in cooperative settings where they support each other. First, cooperative learning is just a way for the teacher to be lazy. And taking the students out of the mainstream classes is a big mistake.   • If you carry straight on you'll come into a large room and this is the main library area. There is fiction in the shelves on the left, and non-fiction materials on your right, and on the shelves on the far wall there is an excellent collection of books relating to local history. We're hoping to add a section on local tourist attractions too, later in the year. Through the far door in the library just past the fiction shelves is a seminar room, and that can be booked for meetings or talks, and next door to that is the children's library, which has a good collection of stories and picture books for the under elevens. Then there's a large room to the right of the library area — that's the multimedia collection, where you can borrow videos and DVDs and so on, and we also have CD-Roms you can borrow to use on your computer at home. It was originally the art collection but that's been moved to another building. And that's about it — oh, there's also the Library Office, on the left of the librarian's desk.

  • Noise in Cities This lecture will be about the science of acoustics, the study of sound, in relation to urban environments such as cities. In the past, researching urban soundscapes was simple. We measured levels of sound in decibels, so I used to take my sound meter and l measured the noise somewhere, and then I might ask a sample of people to say at what level the sound became annoying. With data like this, acoustic engineers have been able to build up what we call noise maps, maps of the sound environment. So they ignore important issues such as the noise someone might hear from the open windows or gardens of their neighbours,- and this sort of noise can be quite significant in summer. As well as that, these records of sound levels take no account of the fact that people vary in their perceptions of noise - so someone like me with years of working in acoustics might be very different from you in that regard.
